One of the more complicated issues today in building science is addressing moisture movement, since moisture can penetrate a building in several different ways and result in material degradation, air quality issues, and failure of the building enclosure. This course examines the ways moisture can enter a structure and discusses the role of different moisture control layers that, when correctly placed and installed, can prevent unwanted moisture infiltration.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Describe how unwanted and uncontrolled moisture can penetrate a building enclosure and why it can lead to poor indoor air quality, low occupant comfort levels, and failure of the envelope.
  • Identify products used in moisture protection systems above and below grade and discuss the importance of selecting materials and systems based on project requirements and local climate conditions.
  • Examine key performance features of the different control layers used to prevent moisture infiltration and recall their role in preventing the premature failure of a structure.
  • Discuss best practices and solutions for the prevention of moisture movement through the building enclosure to improve occupant well-being and the energy efficiency and durability of the envelope.

Approximately 1 hour. Delivered online, at your own pace.
