The building envelope must withstand the effects of long-term exposure to the elements. This course explores rainscreen wall design and the control of hygrothermal loads. The traditional multicomponent backup wall assembly is compared with the single-component, insulated metal composite backup wall system, outlining key differences in design and construction and their overall effect on installation and performance.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Summarize how to properly establish building envelope control layers to protect against the four hygrothermal loads in order to optimize energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and occupant comfort.
  • Describe the traditional multicomponent backup wall assembly and explain its challenges in relation to energy efficiency, installation, and long-term performance.
  • Explain how the design of the insulated composite backup wall system overcomes the challenges of traditional assemblies, contributing to ease of installation and overall thermal efficiency.
  • State how the pre-engineered insulated metal composite backup wall system can integrate with virtually any rainscreen material, allowing designers the freedom to mix and match rainscreen materials across the exterior.

Approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes. Delivered online, at your own pace.
