The need to evaluate thermal bridging in a building’s design and performance has become more prevalent because of the increasing requirements for more energy-efficient buildings. This course provides an introduction to thermal bridging, energy code requirements, and the use of thermal break solutions designed to improve energy efficiency in the building envelope.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Discuss the purpose and benefits of energy codes and how they impact the increasing demands for sustainable building.
  • Define thermal bridging and identify potential connections and bridging paths that will lead to excessive thermal transfer, causing condensation and negative impacts to occupant comfort and health.
  • Explain the effects of thermal bridging on energy efficiency and consumption and the difference between R-values and U-values regarding conductivity in series and parallel.
  • Discuss how thermal break solutions can be incorporated into the building envelope details not only to mitigate effects of thermal bridging, but also to create a healthier building.
