A high-performance building must address four major environmental loads: water, air, vapor, and thermal. The location of the required control layers is critical to effective envelope design. This course explores perfect/universal wall design and the use of single-component insulated metal panels (IMPs) to provide all four control layers. Presented here are discussions on the building envelope, rainscreens, perfect wall design, and IMPs, and more specifically, how to incorporate IMPs into engineered façade systems.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

        - Recognize that testing is done on an entire façade system and that changing components negates approvals and can have critical impacts on performance, leading to envelope failures such as water intrusion and fire.
- Explain how IMPs contribute to a sustainable building envelope by providing continuity of water, air, vapor, and thermal control layers.
- Describe perfect/universal wall design, sequence its components, and discuss how the design works in all climate zones and hygrothermal regions, and for all building types.
- Define rainscreen and defend how IMPs used for barrier walls in engineered façade systems contribute to an aesthetically pleasing envelope, enhanced thermal performance and energy efficiency, and speed of build.
