This course outlines the importance of creating continuity of control layers in building systems. It covers code requirements, typical design of control layers in exterior walls, and approaches to detailing. You will learn how to evaluate systems to obtain durable interface performance and gain a fresh perspective on your own past and future builds.

Background:
Andrew Miles is a Technical Service Engineer with the DuPont Building Knowledge Center. He has over 13 years of experience in building science and commercial construction. He specializes in performance testing of commercial wall assemblies, product application, system integration, and delivering solutions to maintain the continuity of air, water, and thermal barriers. He has participated in third-party mock wall testing for hospitals, airports, and high-rise residential structures, and whole-building air barrier leakage testing for multiple USACE projects. He has provided technical support and air barrier guidance to over 2000 projects. Andrew utilizes his knowledge and expertise to help train and educate installing professionals, to aid project team participants in identifying discontinuities in the air barrier, and to help designers and builders create more durable structures.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Virginia State University and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Andi Wagner Watts is the Commercial Wall Application Technology Leader for DuPont Performance Building Solutions. In her current role, she is focused on improving the overall air/water/thermal performance of the building envelope through application innovation and new product development. Andrea has authored articles, papers, and conference presentations relating to building air/watertightness, interface details, building science, durability, and resiliency, and holds two patents. She is a LEED® Green Associate, is active in a number of industry organizations including ASTM, and is the cochair of the Technical Committee at ABAA.
Andrea holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Cornell University. Her prior roles for Dow Corning and Dow Chemical focused on preventing air and water infiltration through the building envelope. She has successfully helped to develop many products including sealants and air/water barrier system solutions.
