Metal Roofing to the Rescue: Solutions for Harsh and Corrosive Environments

PVC-coated galvanized steel coil for roofing is made for fabrication into metal roofs, as well as the coping, fascia, and flashing typically used for low and steep slopes in the residential and commercial sectors. This course discusses its manufacture and performance properties to show why it ensures a long roof life, even in harsh and corrosive environments.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

• Summarize the performance characteristics of metal roofing and the features that facilitate cost savings, sustainability, weathertightness, and long service for commercial and residential applications.
• Compare metal roofing retrofits with conventional reroofing methods in terms of safety, design and construction, and impact on building occupancy.
• Evaluate the pros and cons of base metal roofing materials and the types of paint systems used to protect metal roofing to improve its durability and prevent premature degradation of a metal roof in a harsh environment.
• Identify three types of corrosion that can occur in metal roofing and discuss why some coatings fail in harsh environments.
• Demonstrate the performance attributes and resilience of PVC-coated galvanized steel coil for roofing by explaining its structure and fabrication.
• Discuss the main industry testing standards that are applicable to coatings on metal roofing systems and demonstrate why PVC-coated steel for roofing can protect homes or buildings in harsh environments and areas vulnerable to severe weather events.
