Advances in Plumbing Design for Healthcare is an introduction to a variety of issues healthcare facilities face with respect to plumbing products when constructing or renovating buildings, and why addressing these issues is important. Whitehall’s BestCare® line of ligature resistant plumbing products and accessories offers innovative solutions intended to reduce sentinel events via strangulation in a behavioral healthcare setting. Whitehall Manufacturing’s Infection Prevention Sinks, CareWare® line of Patient Care Units, and all in one hand washing and drying system tackles the problem of Hospital Associated Infections (HAI’s) from a preventative design perspective. Additionally, Whitehall’s bariatric line focuses on providing obese patients with appropriate equipment while respecting patient dignity. Because of the diverse needs of our current population, design trends are shifting towards a universal room which meets the needs of ADA, bariatric capacity, and other patient requirements.

The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and with recidivism rates as high as 75% within five years, the prospects for released inmates are dim. There is no simple solution to these issues, but one approach is to focus on rehabilitation to help inmates reintegrate successfully into society upon release. This course looks at the role evidence-based building design can play in a rehabilitative environment that promotes healing, autonomy, and growth. Design strategies are presented with a focus on ADA-compliant, ligature-resistant plumbing products and water management systems that support a clean, safe, secure, rehabilitative environment.

The importance of handwashing in regard to personal health is well understood, and most people feel they know how to do it properly. However, the places where and methods by which hands are washed are not always as healthy and safe as they should or appear to be. This course outlines the proper handwashing techniques, especially for healthcare and food preparation contexts; explains how germs, viruses, and bacteria are spread and where sanitation problems with sinks may reside; and describes how to select and specify the most appropriate washup, infection prevention, and scrub sinks, countertops, and fitments.

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects buildings by providing real-time data for action and evaluative purposes. Plumbing products can be part of the connected building to reduce maintenance and costs, help conserve water, and provide extra health and safety benefits not achievable with nonconnected plumbing products. This course reviews some examples of the data that can be collected from commercial plumbing products to deliver critical information to building managers and owners. It also describes how these products create cost and time savings, enhance health, safety, and compliance, and contribute to overall occupant satisfaction and wellness.

Although drains may not be a primary thought when specifying plumbing, valuing the importance of proper drainage is essential to a building’s overall safety and longevity. With proper drainage in place, both internally and externally - human and vehicular traffic surfaces are intrinsically safer and more sanitary; the building and its grounds require fewer repairs and less maintenance and downtime; and possible moisture buildup and mold is avoided. This course presents plumbing innovations that ensure proper drainage so that building owners and patrons can focus their thoughts on other business matters.

Knowing your building’s ideal water pressure and how to achieve that pressure is essential to your overall plumbing effectiveness and safety, patrons’ health and safety, and your water conservation efforts. Determining ideal water pressure is not straightforward and many factors should be considered including building use, physical characteristics, codes, and plumbing components. Many of today’s innovative plumbing products can contribute to water conservation and cost savings but it’s also essential that specific water pressure levels are provided for optimal operation.
