Earth Advantage Institute Launches Commercial Green Building Certification Program

September 13, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- (September 12, 2012) - Earth Advantage Institute (EAI) www.earthadvantage.org, a nonprofit sustainable building organization, has launched its Earth Advantage® Commercial (EAC) green building certification program. The program is based on three levels of certification: Platinum, Gold, and Silver. The measures are cumulative and prescriptive, allowing for a greatly simplified certification process, which EAI's pilot program found to be missing in the market segment. Developers, architects, engineers, green building consultants, and builders welcome a prescriptive, simplified, and cost effective pathway to certification for commercial buildings smaller than 100,000 square feet. These professionals note that the absence of such a certification option is a strong deterrent against certifying smaller buildings.

What You Need to Know to Avoid Leaky Tile Decks with Tiledek Waterproof Membrane: Part 2 – The Alternatives

September 13, 2012

In part one of this four-part series of detailed questions about Duradek Ultra Tiledek membranes we explained what Tiledek is, why waterproofing is essential in outdoor tile applications, specific details on evaluations and testing results on Tiledek as a roofing membrane, and the typical methods of installing outdoor tile. In this article we will discuss the alternative methods of waterproofing under exterior tile, and why Tiledek is the superior choice. What does Tiledek compete with? The answer to this question depends upon the deck being over living quarters or not. Obviously if it is over living quarters, then the membrane must be a roofing membrane and more importantly, it must be installed with roofing principles in mind. Should the deck not be over living quarters, there might be no building code requirement that the membrane is a roofing product but the installation details should be no less stringent considering the consequences of leaks. Water intrusion can cause very expensive damage to the structure and we believe all waterproofing jobs demand the attention of a professional. For the purposes of this discussion, we will separately deal with roofing and non-roofing applications. Chicago Metallic helps high school Fine Arts Center achieve aesthetic and acoustic goals on an accelerated schedule

September 10, 2012

Earning a CISCA 2011 Construction Excellence Gold Award (Chicago) -- Relying on design and construction partners with innovative ideas and products, Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tenn., opened a new Fine Arts Center within just 12 months. Chicago Metallic(R) Corporation helped the team meet the project’s aesthetic and acoustic goals, while staying on schedule and budget. The creative, collaborative approach to a complex ceiling project earned the project a 2011 Construction Excellence Gold Award from the Ceilings & Interior Systems Construction Association (CISCA). As a National School of Excellence, Bradley Central High School’s Fine Arts Center was held to the highest standards. Designed by KBJM Architects, TRI-CON was the general contractor for the Tennessee-based team. As the installing contractor, Wallace Tile worked closely with Chicago Metallic, to meet the project’s fast-paced deadline and design goals. “Our goal was to create a little gem for the high school campus. We wanted this to be a showpiece, with lots of natural light and upgraded finishes,” notes Angie Lyon, project architect with KBJM Architects. “I didn’t want a traditional flat ceiling. My vision was for a feeling of movement, something that would draw the eye. CurvGrid is fluid and dynamic.” Chicago Metallic’s CurvGrid(TM) Two-Directional Aluminum Suspension System was provided with flexible metal panels finished in “Morning Dew,” a soft, metallic gold color, which complements the Fine Arts Center’s interior palette of warm golds and yellows. Helping create the Center’s floating ceiling sections housing acoustic panels, Wallace Tile installed Chicago Metallic’s 1200 Seismic Suspension System. These sections have a stepped perimeter for visual effect and Infinity(TM) Perimeter Trim for a crisp, clean look. “We had a very tight frame for completing this project,” notes Cason Conn, project manager for general contractor TRI-CON. “We had to condense the schedule and that meant the auditorium seats needed to be installed prior to the ceiling system going in. As a result, scaffolding could not be erected for the ceiling installation. That presented quite a challenge for Wallace Tile..” Wallace Tile’s vice president, Seth Bussey, worked with Chicago Metallic’s district sales manager, Carlo Grohovac, to develop an alternate installation plan. Their solution was to assemble the CurvGrid sections on the ground, connect them into pods, hoist the pods to the ceiling area using a lift, and then connect them in the air. In all, five 8-by-25-foot pods were assembled and installed. “Once we got the idea of how the puzzle went together, it was very easy to install,” says Bussey. “We got faster all the time. The system is very user-friendly, and Chicago Metallic did a great job in helping us work this out.” Grohovac elaborates, “The innovative assembly process, and CurvGrid’s combination of rigidity and light weight, made this possible. An installation like this would be virtually impossible to accomplish with any other curved ceiling systems. CurvGrid’s system incorporates a primary carrier, which is essentially a spine that runs along the back of the panel assembly. It ties the suspension components together creating a stronger system that is lifted into place and attached by suspension wires. This carrier also requires fewer wires, which enhances the floating cloud effect of the ceiling.” Grohovac adds, “Everyone was pleased with the results. The ceiling’s beautifully curved clouds seem to float and dance in a performance of their own.” The 25,000 square-foot Fine Arts Center houses a 600-seat auditorium with new lighting and sound systems, dressing rooms, separate band and choral rooms and classrooms, plus a lobby and gathering space. The $3.3 million project was completed within 12 months, per the school district's direction. In spite of the accelerated timeline, Bradley Central High School celebrated the Center’s grand opening on schedule with a baccalaureate service for the class of 2011’s graduating seniors. In addition to receiving the school district’s applause, the project earned a Gold Award in the 2011 CISCA Construction Excellence Awards. These prestigious awards recognize CISCA members who produced the year’s finest examples of interior commercial construction. Chicago Metallic Corporation accepted the award on April 18, 2012 at the CISCA Annual Convention and INTEX Expo in Charlotte, N.C. Bradley Central High School’s Fine Arts Center was honored in the Ceilings Category for East Region.

High above the games and players, the Magna T-Cell ceiling system’s open cell design masks the vast stretch of ceiling with staggered elevations, while complementing the gaming area’s interior finishes. “We were able to match the color scheme really well by finishing the Magna T-Cell in a custom tan color. Although it’s high in the air, you can still see that it matches the walls and décor. The ceiling system is installed at different levels, almost like clouds, to break up the sizeable, uniform space,” describes Jeremy Perchinsky, Chicago Metallic’s sales representative. “Because it’s an open cell system, you can see through it, so the plumbing and electrical systems above it are painted black.” Beyond aesthetics, one of the determining priorities was the ceiling systems’ load bearing capacity, notes Aguilar. “We needed a ceiling suspension system that could handle all of the speakers, cameras and lights that a space like this requires. The density of these suspended systems also varies from area to area, depending on whether we’re over a gaming area or an open walkway.” To ensure the Magna T-Cell system met the building team’s criteria, Chicago Metallic worked with its distributor, United Building Materials, to provide a mock-up. SOSH Architects and Tandem Las Vegas approved the mock-up and Gilbane Building Company approved Valley Interior Systems as the installing contractor. In total, Valley Interior Systems installed 50,300 square feet of Chicago Metallic’s Magna T-Cell systems. Krise reiterates that timely shipments and staging were critical to the project’s successful completion. “Chicago Metallic sent what was needed first and followed with additional material. It worked out very well. They went above and beyond to make sure it was correct and the color matched the surroundings.”

Bollards Withstand Harsh Demands of Arizona Flood Plains

September 06, 2012

In the spring of 2010, a Tucson area design consulting firm, Kimley Horn and Associates Inc., employed Reliance Foundry bollards in an application that would truly test their durability. The project proved to be a success and after two years in one of the harshest climates in the US, the bollards have successfully endured. Kimley Horn and Associates Inc. realized that this environment could pose a threat to the structural integrity of the bollards. Between July and September, the area surrounding Tucson often experiences high levels of rainfall. Locals often refer to this period as “monsoon season” and there was an expectation that the bollards would at times be submerged in water. Couple with that the fact that Arizona also experiences some of the hottest weather in the country and one will see the scope of the elemental strains that would be placed on the bollards. Having dealt with Reliance Foundry before, Kimley Horn and Associates again turned to the industry leader to see if bollards could in fact withstand the demands of this application. The Reliance Foundry bollards did perform and after experiencing two “monsoon seasons” where water often surrounded the bollards, the Reliance Foundry bollards show no signs of surface damage and no signs of structural damage. Kimley Horn and Associates selected Reliance Foundry’s model R-7572 bollard for the project and, because of the harsh demands of the Arizona climate, specified that an additional layer of epoxy primer be applied to the interior of the bollard. The bollards have exceeded all expectations and experts say that it is due to the level of anti-corrosive protection that the Reliance coating system provided both the interior and exterior of the bollard. Reliance Foundry uses a proprietary coating system to provide its bollards with anti-corrosive protection. All ductile iron bollards are coated with a one part epoxy primer and then finished with a polyester, semi-gloss powder-coating. Both the primer and coating are environmentally safe. In fact, the primer is often used in other applications to coat the inside of pipes that hold drinking water. To withstand the harsh demands of Arizona’s flood plains, any product needs to be durable. After two years in a climate that was at times extremely wet and at other times extremely dry, the Reliance Foundry bollards used in this project look as good as they did on their installation day.
