AIBC Annual Conference
Description: From April 26 to 28, 2007, the biggest AIBC event of the year will take place: the AIBC Annual Conference. Held this year at the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel and Conference Centre, this year’s conference comes on the heels of last year’s Festival of Architecture. While the Festival was the most successful AIBC and RAIC conference to date, this year’s event could be even bigger. In conferences past, we have often looked to the outside world for inspiration and subjects. In 2007, this will all change, as we intend to celebrate the creativity and artistry that springs from our own region. This year, we will showcase the architecture that inspires the world and originates here. Themed Making a Difference: Architecture in the Pacific Northwest, our conference will feature noted BC and Pacific Northwest architects such as Peter Busby MAIBC, Gregory Henriquez MAIBC, David Miller, Robert E. Miller, Franc D’Ambrosio MAIBC, Dr. Ray Cole and Randy Sharp, landscape architect, recently featured in Architectural Record. As the conference grows and becomes more popular each year, we’re able to attract top names from across the country and around the world. Building Envelope guru Dr. Joe Lstiburek, California architect George Yu AIA and renowned Toronto architect Siamak Hariri OAA will all be featured speakers this year. As with every AIBC Annual Conference, members will be able to obtain all 18 Learning Units by attending the entire conference. We hope to offer courses that will inspire as well as educate. Featuring education streams in Business, Science and Technology, Building Envelope, Design and our Theme stream, courses at this year’s conference will be talked about months after the last course has run. The conference will culminate on the final evening with the President’s Dinner and Awards Gala, where architects will recognize their peers and the excellence in architecture and design that they have created. Get cutting edge professional education, socialize with old friends and colleagues and celebrate the excellence in architecture that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Making a Difference: Architecture in the Pacific Northwest – recognizing, celebrating and inspiring architects all across the world, right here at home.

Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Annual General Meeting
Description: The 2004 CISC Annual Convention was held June 9-12, 2004 at Jasper Park Lodge in Alberta. As usual, the convention began with the CISC Detailing Committee, which was well attended by detailers and fabricators. After reports from different regions were received, and an urgent request to have a member from each region represented on the National Detailing Committee, the discussion turned to why some CISC members have resigned. A number of detailing companies have not renewed partly because they question the value of their membership in the organization. With high membership fees and no assurance they will be the detailer of choice with CISC fabricators still selecting the low(est) cost supplier, there is little incentive for them to join. It was suggested by some present that fabricators should at least advise their non-CISC subcontract detailers that they must be members of the CISC. This is a hot topic, and sure to be discussed further at next year’s convention in Quebec.

Canadian Solar Buildings Conference
Description: Buildings account for approximately 30% of Canada’s energy consumption, 50% of its electricity consumption and 28% of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The available solar energy incident on the building envelope far exceeds building energy needs, particularly when solar energy utilization systems and energy efficiency measures are optimally integrated. The energy consumption and GHG emissions, which are associated with heating, cooling and lighting buildings, have the potential to be substantially reduced if the incident solar energy on the façades and roofs of buildings is utilized. This 32nd Annual Conference of the Solar Energy Society of Canada is held jointly with the 2nd Conference of the newly formed Solar Buildings Research Network that brings together top researchers from 10 Canadian Universities to develop the solar-optimized building of the 21st century. This conference will be a cornerstone of Canadian efforts to promote innovative research and development in solar energy utilization. It will foster a culture of excellence in an area that significantly affects two major sectors of the Canadian economy – energy and construction. The conference will be held in the centrally located Calgary Telus Convention Centre.

AIA International Conference Athens: Ecology + Environment + Architecture
Description: Chapter meeting and conference: Today, with a growing global population of 6.6 billion and technological advances that allow each individual to affect the environment, and collectively to release every day more than 70 million tons of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere, it is clear that the balance which the Athenian Democracy and 19th century Athens were enjoying with their surrounding environment, has been altered. Buildings, the products of architects, are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 70% of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Modern Athens, a city which was laid out in the 1830’s as a garden city for 50,000 inhabitants, is home today for nearly 5 million people, almost half of the population of Greece. The annual AIACE conference in Athens is not just a gathering of Greek, European and US architects and architecture students. It is a point in time when History and Ecology, Modern Architecture and the Environment, Ethos and Pathos merge.

APS Hosting Workshop to Help Cities and Towns Obtain ‘Stimulus’ Funds for Energy Efficiency Projects
Description: Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) will host an all-day workshop on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to help cities, towns, counties and Tribal entities maximize funding available for energy efficiency projects in public and private buildings. The funds will provide a wealth of opportunities for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects that can cut energy costs, reduce emissions and help spark economic activity in cities and towns across Arizona. It will offer practical tools and information for planning and implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in their communities. The workshop will include presentations on: ● The energy efficiency ‘stimulus’ funds; ● Leveraging federal funds with existing APS program funding; ● Preparing EECBG grant applications; ● Project costs/results, calculating emissions avoided and jobs created; and ● Identifying and prioritizing energy projects
