Created in 1997, this prestigious award honors individuals and groups who are working to solve the critical environmental challenge of transforming blighted and contaminated areas into productive new uses. The Phoenix Awards™ are widely recognized as the outstanding award for achievement of excellence in Brownfield redevelopment, and are often called “the Brownfields equivalent of Hollywood’s Oscar.”
The 2007 Phoenix Award winners represent outstanding Brownfield projects from each of the 10 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regions. The 2007 winners are:

Region 10: Thea Foss Waterway Brownfield Revitalization Project, Tacoma, Washington
Community Impact Winner: University of Illinois Chicago South Campus Development Project, Chicago, Illinois
