Freeze, Thaw Cycle Can Take a Toll on Roofs and Homeowners

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The days are getting longer and temperatures have begun to moderate, but before the baseball gloves and swimsuits come out homeowners must still endure a period of freezing and thawing that can be hazardous to their roofs.

Winter warm spells are a critical time for roofs, as freezing and thawing temperatures melt snow behind ice dams trapping water that can cause potential damage to a home, says John Valiton, a roofing expert and CEO of Ice Dam Removal Systems (IDRS). And each year there are news stories recounting injuries to homeowners who fall from roofs while trying to clear ice and snow.
