- Describe how steel floor joist systems can contribute to a LEED® certified building.
- Explain the difference between closed-loop recycling and downcycling, and understand key steel recycling facts.
- Explain the different methods of manufacturing steel and their impact on recycled content.
- Identify key opportunities to reduce material use during construction by using steel floor joists.
- Identify key areas where steel floor joist systems must be detailed for thermal performance, and provide general details.

Background: Douglas Fox has been involved in product development and research in light steel framing for 10 years and has been working with iSPAN Systems for the past 6 years. Throughout Doug’s time with iSPAN he has participated in the assembly of numerous projects, providing him hands on knowledge of site construction techniques. Doug is a senior member of the iSPAN team of professionals, focused on developing simple light steel framing solutions to meet the needs of all stakeholders in building construction, from architects to installers. A registered Professional Engineer, Douglas has published several articles related to light steel framing. At iSPAN Systems Douglas is the Engineering Manager, he provides sales with engineering support and oversees joist design for production and related work.
