Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Describe the impact impervious surfaces have had on environmental and human health.
Define permeable interlocking concrete pavement (PICP) and describe how it improves upon the negative environmental impact of impervious surfaces.
List the components of a PICP system and discuss design variables for different design objectives.
List ideal existing site conditions for successful use of PICPs.
Identify different types of permeable interlocking concrete pavements and their benefits for a variety of conditions and uses.

Background: Brad Swanson, ASLA, CSI, CDT, LEED® AP began his career with Unilock in July 2005 as a commercial product representative. Prior to starting with Unilock, he spent 12 years practicing as a landscape architect in Chicago. He is a registered landscape architect in the states of Illinois, Indiana and California. His project experience and interest were primarily in campus design, parks and recreation, including athletic field design. Several of his projects used segmental paving systems for plazas, streetscapes and other pedestrian spaces. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Construction Specifications Institute and the United States Green Building Council.
Jay Rients is the Commercial Sales Manager for Unilock Chicago. After graduating from the University of Illinois with a BLA, he began a career in hardscape sales. His passion for landscape architecture has created a direct connect with environmental issues and permeable pavement has been at the forefront of his career. Most of all large scale environmental paving projects in the Midwest have been touched by Mr. Rients as he continues to strive to improve the built environment in which we all work and live.
