Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- List the five components of sustainable streets.
Discuss the features and environmental/societal benefits of designing with asphalt coating and thermosplastic systems.
Explain the three environmental considerations for choosing pavements (recyclability, carbon footprint, and heat island effect) and how cool pavements mitigate heat island effect.
Discuss pavement design and traffic calming strategies that utilize asphalt coating/thermosplastic technologies.
Explain how New York City’s Sustainable Street Plan is helping to create a more livable, safer environment.

Name: Phil Sheldon
Title: Director of Project Development, Integrated Paving Concepts Inc.
Background: Phil graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Landscape Architecture in 1977, and became a Registered Landscape Architect in 1985. He worked as a park planner with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and practiced for 10+ years with Sasaki Associates in the Boston area. He has extensive experience in projects of all sizes and types, including commercial, residential, municipal, institutional, environmental, and transportation. As Director of Project Development for Integrated Paving Concepts, he has helped designers, engineers and developers with the specification of “fit-for-purpose” materials and solutions for all types of projects.
