Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Discuss the terms accessible and inclusive as they relate to playground design.
- Discuss the tradeoffs and consequences of playground design decisions and the impact individual decisions make to the entire playground experience.
- Determine why planning is the key to successfully executing a universal playground.
- Discuss why layout is the biggest single factor between only typically-developing children playing and everyone playing.
- Identify applicable laws and regulations and illustrated how playground design can move beyond basic compliance to create outdoor play environments for everyone.

Background: Ian Proud has spent 16 years in the outdoor recreation industry in product design, market research, public relations, and inclusive play.
Ian has a BA in design from DeMonfort University (UK), an MBA from Loyola College in Maryland and is Fellow of the Royal Society of Art (FRSA.
Ian has coordinated a nationwide team of cross-functional experts to develop and refine a 72 page, manufacturer-neutral reference document. This has been subsequently reviewed and revised to be an acknowledged international source of inclusive play tenets. He is also the principle facilitator and project manager for development of the Inclusive Play Design Guide and all support and teaching materials.
