Gas Hearth Appliances: Enhancing Living Environments
For years, gas-burning hearth appliances have outsold wood-burning appliances due to
the many favorable benefits they provide. This course provides a review of the variety of gas hearth
appliances (GHA), the advantages they offer, and the types of venting systems that are available today.
Also presented is a discussion of the factors that require consideration to facilitate a successful GHA
installation.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Define the features of gas hearth appliances and the benefits of specifying a GHA versus a wood-burning solution.
- Discuss the characteristics of the different varieties of gas hearth products that are available.
- List and explain the principal types of vent systems that are used with gas hearth appliances.
- State the considerations that are required to facilitate a successful GHA installation.

Background: Dana has been employed at Wolf Steel Ltd., manufacturer of Napoleon and Continental Fireplaces, Furnaces and Napoleon Grills for over 14 years. With a total of 26 years spent in the Hearth Industry, Dana began his practical education by installing and servicing gas and wood burning hearth appliances. After 8 years of learning about hearth appliance installation challenges, Dana brought that knowledge and field perspective to the manufacturing sector where he applies it to the development of existing, new hearth and other heating products. As the Manager of Wolf Steel’s Technical Services department, Dana oversees a team dedicated to supporting Wolf Steel’s multiple product lines by imparting and collecting technical information to and from their customers through a call centre specifically for their dealers. They also conduct regular in-house and field training programs for their many product lines to ensure the successful installation and utilization of their equipment.
