Electrical Device Safety
Electrical devices impact the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants, so proper specification is critical. This course looks at electrical devices and the safety issues associated with them. The course includes discussions on the features of duplex receptacles, hospital grade receptacles, GFCIs and other electrical devices, and also discusses updated UL requirements and NEC codes.
Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Identify the risks associated with electrical receptacles and specify the appropriate receptacle to meet the project requirements.
- Discuss three separate testing standards, the tests associated with each of these standards, and relate these to product specification.
- List the features to look for in duplex receptacles and hospital grade receptacles, including special requirements to meet project needs and ensure safety.
- Describe GFCI devices and their features, and explain the updated UL certification tests that they must comply with.

Background: Bill Desrosiers has over 25 years' experience in the electrical industry and his breadth of product and sales knowledge is extensive. Born in Massachusetts and raised in Connecticut, Bill’s career in the electrical industry started at an Electrical Wholesale Distributor in Manchester Connecticut. After three years in the distribution end of the industry, Bill worked for a number of Manufacturer Representatives representing a wide variety of electrical products. Bill joined the Wiremold Company in 1987 and has held various jobs in Sales, Marketing, and Manufacturing and currently holds the position of Manager of Training. The Wiremold Company was purchased by Legrand in 2000 and Bill has been with the company for over 24 years. In his current role, Bill oversees all aspects of training development and delivery for the company’s Sales Representatives and customers. He is a member of ASTD and is a CSI-CCPR,MAI.
