Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:
- Explain the personal and life safety requirements regarding the illumination of steps, ramps, and paths of egress.
- Detail new model code recommendations with respect to the illumination of steps, ramps, and paths of egress and describe how these codes may be implemented into the design of buildings without greatly impacting energy usage.
- Identify different lighting sources and discuss their assets and liabilities in terms of light output and energy efficiency.
- Discuss illumination system design options and considerations to avoid issues such as glare and insufficient lighting levels.
- Explain the operation and installation requirements of an illuminated handrail system and illustrate how they are capable of delivering high levels of uniform light at an excess of that required by code while keeping energy consumption and costs down.

Background: Ken Eidsvold is the Vice President of Marketing and Product Development for Intense Lighting and has been with the company for 10 years. His responsibilities include overseeing all new product development, product launches, art direction, web development, advertising strategy, tradeshow coordination and sales training. Most recently he led the development efforts of V-Rail, Intense Lighting’s new illuminated handrail designed to illuminate stairways, ramps and paths of egress. Mr. Eidsvold holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and is an active member of the Illuminating Engineering Society.
