Health, Safety and Welfare
Growing US cities face escalating housing costs, residential and commercial displacement, homelessness, and the suburbanization of poverty. As increasing numbers of households are pushed out of the city by rising housing costs, they are burdened with long commutes and increased transportation costs while their carbon emissions escalate. These challenges are exacerbated by a deeply embedded policy—single-family zoning—that accounts for 75% or more of the land area allotted for housing in many fast-growing US cities. Part 2 of this two-part series outlines policies implemented at the city and state levels to make existing single-family neighborhoods more inclusive, equitable, walkable, and sustainable. It illustrates innovative case studies at the building scale to increase access to these neighborhoods for both renters and homeowners. In addition, it reviews efforts by architects and AIA chapters to address this issue despite the controversy that surrounds it. Each part of Right to the City can be taken as an individual course.

Interlocking concrete pavers (ICP) have the ability to spread applied loads via the interlock between each unit. This means that the surface does not respond structurally as single pavers but as a composite paved surface. This structural characteristic of ICP allows the design method for these pavements to be based on flexible pavement design. In many climate zones, the heating and cooling of outside air (OA) is one of the largest energy loads and contributors to building emissions. Traditional commercial HVAC designs based on the Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP) rely on large volumes of outside air to maintain acceptable indoor air quality, often resulting in oversized HVAC equipment and wasted energy. Adding to this, good indoor air quality is no longer just a matter of meeting code but is now seen as a necessity for business continuity, improved learning outcomes, and employee productivity. In this course, we will examine ASHRAE Standard 62.1, a recognized standard for nonresidential ventilation system design, and its Indoor Air Quality Procedure (IAQP), which allows for the use of air cleaning technology to offset outside air for a more efficient ventilation system design. We will review the requirements and calculations for this procedure, showing the impact on indoor air quality and energy use, and present a number of case studies. We will also show how IAQP used with air cleaning can help achieve LEED® v4 BD+C: New Construction and O+M: Existing Buildings and WELL v2™ certification.
